I was listening to a mid 90s underground hiphop song yesterday and they name dropped the Infiniti J30 in the song. The idea of a rapper bragging about rocking a J30 15 years later really amuses me…clearly at one point the J30 (Y32 Leopard J Ferie in Japan), was a desirable car to own. Yet, despite some hiphop street cred (GS300s were the kings back then btw) the J30 is one of the ugliest Japanese cars ever, in my opinion. I don’t think I ever once felt that the J30 was a good looking car, it is just massively ugly..it was, it is, and forever will be as far as my opinion goes.

So I got to thinking…did people ever tune these ugly ass J30s? Sure enough I found a couple while digging around such as the one above and this one below.

If you get past the uninspired egg like shape, the car actually has a proper FR layout and a VG30DE engine. Granted it came with a 4 speed automatic in the states, but that would not stop someone from swapping in a manual transmission and building a drift car out of it.

There is something undeniably cool about racing or drifting an ugly ass car. The more strange a car is, the more cool it is to see it drifting or crazily modified. I think this logic is similar to the thought behind people converting 180SXs into pickup trucks like team orange did back in the day. The more unique and strange, the more entertaining! I’ve seen R33 GT-R wagon conversions and all sorts of madness…

This is where you come in… So the question is, what can you guys share and add to this topic? Are there any proper tuned J30s out there?  Have you seen any crazy ugly Japanese  cars that are modified and become cool or entertaining as a result?

I’m looking for unlikely Japanese tuner cars, this is the theme here…I wonder if you guys can contribute any ideas or pics.

EDIT 6:15PM - Be sure to check the comments for links to some crazy stuff. I just saw the first cool link to a 500hp J30 with a 300ZX Turbo motor swap. That car proved my point entirely…take an ugly car and modify the hell out of it and it becomes cool. Great find WebStarr!
