GT-RR For “R” Pt. 2 - Wald Meets Esprit

Posted by Ben

Continuing our latest GT-R build finds us cutting up a rather expensive Wald front bumper…

Part 1: http://www.bespokeventures.com/blog/2009/09/21/gt-rr-for-r-our-latest-build-in-progress/

Our partner body shop in New Jersey has been hard at work preparing this demonstration vehicle for us and the car’s ultimate owner, our client “R” who asked us to build him his ultimate version of a street tuned and styled GT-R. Assuming you’re caught up on the goals of the project, outlined in part 1 above, now lets look at some of the details that have come along so far.

First up is the one part I find scary about the build. This is the first time I think anyone has been crazy enough to cut into the Wald front bumper and reshape it. While cutting into FRP and reshaping it is easy, doing a carbon fiber on carbon fiber reshape is really scary because there is only so much you can do with the carbon fiber to finish it off and make it look perfect. Luckily we have great partners for our builds that have earned our trust.

Because this car will be pushing a lot more boost and power than the stock GT-R, naturally we selected the massively sized and massively popular Japanese Esprit GT-R intercooler for the job. Part of what makes the Esprit intercooler effective and so cool (literally) is the dry carbon fiber Esprit Intercooler Duct. The challenge is that the Wald front bumper in this area already has a large single piece carbon fiber cover which spans from the top of the grill to the bottom ducts. Cutting was the only option. So the question is, will it look good when it is done!? I’ve been confident because I feel the look of the Esprit duct is perfect, so perfect to the point that the car should have come that way. But that’s just my opinion, and I’m more interested in your opinion. Lets see what you think!

Above you can see the challenge and the starting point for how we needed to reshape the front bumper.

Above you can see the part that scares me. Cutting into the FRP portion of the bumper and also mirroring that cut on the Carbon Fiber overlay center section of the Wald bumper to prepare it for the Esprit Duct.

Will It Work!?

Hell yes it works! Look at that! This is what I’m excited about today as the pictures from Jersey hit my email box…the first Wald x Esprit front bumper, ready for that massive Esprit intercooler! Now I’m even more pumped up about how this car is going to turn out! I think this looks way better than the Wald Bumper to begin with, never mind the fact that this car will now be even more original looking which will bring our client “R” more satisfaction than simply driving a car bought out of a catalog.

A couple of other small updates as the Carbon Dry Japan interior parts were installed:
