Garage Saurus R35 GT-R Con Rod vs OEM

I made a blog post a while back about the differences between US and Japanese tuning philosophy with the GT-R. The conclusion was that the US usually is in a mad rush between everyone trying to break the records first, which means power is made rapidly but things break…whereas the Japanese take their time and build up the core foundation of the vehicle (engine internals, drivetrain, etc) so that when they make power it is sustainable. Well, up until this point the two tuning superpowers (US and Japan) have been on separate trajectories with their own quests, but the time is coming when the paths will meet.

With multiple 800+hp capable turbo kits underway in the US, the Japanese are coming up with two different engine building solutions which will soon allow GT-R owners to test the on paper capability of those 800+ hp parts.

The first breaking news comes from my good friend Junichi Tanaka (owner of JUN in Japan). Tanaka-san emailed me the other week asking for pre-orders on his “custom kit”. http://gt-rr.com/gt-r/r35/jun/part/custom_kit_pistons_rods_crankshaft/pid/555. I’m actually very proud that he came to us to debut the custom kit. JUN is already known for building legendary stroker kits and this new kit promises to continue the legend into the latest generation GT-R. Unfortunately Tanaka-san set the price quite high (over $16k) which will leave a lot of GT-R owners waiting for another option.

Fortunately our new connection with Garage Saurus over the past year is paying off as we keep in touch with their developments. Saurus just came out with a great quality and more affordable h-beam connecting rod kit for the GT-R to allow it to handle 800hp. http://gt-rr.com/gt-r/r35/garage_saurus/part/h-beam_connecting_rod_set/pid/543 Garage Saurus is busy at work right now assembling a complete engine which they feel will be capable of delivering the 800hp dream.

With the JUN kit finishing production in September and the Saurus con rods already out, the time is approaching for the devlopment of the first series of 800+ hp GT-Rs in the world.
