Basashi!

Posted by Ben

One of these days I’m going to write a bit more in depth on travel tips to Japan since it’s kind of become a second home to me. In the meantime, I thought I’d simply post about Basashi (raw fatty horse meat, or perhaps you could call it Horse Toro).

Quite honestly I feel bad for people who have a closed mind to trying new things and expanding their horizons to new foods. Deep down in my core principals of how I see life, I feel that life is best enjoyed with an open mind and a hope to constantly discover new passions…even if they seem daunting or foreign at first. Indeed many of the passions I have in my life are things that I learned about, not by following the norm but by looking everywhere and considering everything. Looking back, I know without a doubt that my life is much richer for it.

So if you’re like me, would you enjoy trying “Choicest raw fatty horse meat” at a Japanese restaurant if you saw it on your menu? Absolutely!

Choicest Raw Fatty Horse Meat in Japan

One of the reasons why I love Japan so much is because I’ve learned so much from going there over the years.  Its been about 10 years since I first went there, and the culture has expanded my horizons in many ways I never would expect. After a decade of loving Japanese culture and cuisine, I take their recommendation very seriously because quite often the Japanese do food the best of anyone in the world. Sometimes it just takes an open mind to be willing to accept it, especially if you’re not used to it! It took me about 4 years of enjoying sushi to finally “get” Uni (sea urchin). Now its one of my favorites. Being a current favorite, I would never regret trying it and disliking it my first time, or second time or third time…In time I learned to understand why it was so damn good, and gradually it all made sense. I believe that if thousands of people love something and I dont, more often than not I simply just dont get it and the fault is with me. So either I reject it and possibly lose one more thing that I could love in life, or I try to understand why others love it. More often than not, I learn to understand and I acquire new things I love quite often.

So how is raw fatty horse meat?

So-So, nothing special.

(damn…talk about anti-climatic after all of that writing, huh?)

Flavor is pretty good but a little too chewy for it to be great. I’ve eaten it a couple of times and I’d do it again for sure, but nothing I’m fiending for. Ask me about raw chicken sometime…

To see how perhaps culturally biased your views on eating horse meat, check out this link to it on wikipedia.org. I think you will be surprised when you read the bottom section about how it is represented in different cultures.
