Although I’m always looking for progression and the next great (not necessarily big) thing, there will always be a soft spot in my heart for old school style. But who says progression can’t meet the old school? Certainly not Shaw Takahashi. Super Street recently did a feature on his 240Z.
My favorite idea for an old school ride JDM ride would be a Honda S800 powered by a VFR800 motorcycle engine which would bring two more gears and a heap more power. Theoretically this wouldn’t be too hard to pull of since the S800 is already chain-drive and the VFR engine is super compact. You could go as far as you want with the rest of the car, or even supercharge the engine, but you’d be certain to end up with the four-wheeled definition of fun with a redline that makes the F20C look like a diesel and 400lbs less weight than a Lotus Elise.
There’s also the possibility to bring back the old school in newer rides. Check out the RX-7 below. Combine that paint and similar interior appointments with an RX-8 on Konig B-Bombs and a pair of front-quarter mounted mirrors and you’d have the grooviest car at the next Hot Import Nights.
