PCAL - Dare to be Different pt. 2: Hot Rod Style

So now that different is cool, what cars are the Hot Rod boys kicking out? Well, Hot Rod magazine devoted a cover to different cars and inside was everything from a ‘48 Tucker dropped on ‘bags to what I can only describe as a modified-class dirt tracker for the road. Most if not all are still up at in Hot Rod’s featured cars section. However, all those cars have since been thoroughly upstaged by a car know as the Ferrambo.

This year, the Ferrambo won what I believe to be the single most prestigious award in Hot Rodding, the Ridler. This award has been given out since 1964 to cars that represent the very best of hot rodding. There have been some oddballs over the past 40-some years, but the Ferrambo embodies the dare to be different ethos better than any car in the past for me.

Like several Ridler winners of the past, the Ferrambo is a 60’s American car with exquisite detailing and perfect paint. Where the Ferrambo parts from cars of the past is where it receives much of the inspiration for its design: Italy. The crew at Divers Street Rods didn’t just start with a Rambler, they also had a trashed Ferrari 360 Modena. They used not only the engine and transaxle, but also the carbon ceramic brakes, a Lusso front end and even Ferrari-esque tailored luggage. To this they added touches of their own like bespoke wheels with a custom center-lock section designed in CAD.

Pirelli, as sponsor of the finalist from which a Ridler winner is chosen said “Italian passion for performance and design has a place in American custom car culture.” I think the Divers crew would agree as they posted the quote on their website. This car represents a perfect merging of influences. Old and new, American and Italian, hot rods and exotics, technology and craftsmanship. I think the results of a thoughtful combination of seemingly incongruous parts and influences speak for themselves. Not only can it be done, but outside influences bring something to the car it could never have if its builders stayed “in the box.”
