I’m on a bit of a mission lately to infuse a bit of The Real JDM into The Fast and the Furious 4. I’ve been doing a few things with them on this film. One part of my involvement is already filmed (should be a really awesome scene), the second part is in planning.
I spent the day on set today. Had a good meeting and enjoyed some great free food. Seriously though, if I was a regular in the movie industry I’d be HUGELY overweight…the quality, quantity and FREEness of the food on set is incredible.
About F&F 4, I’ll release information when its a little more safe to do so. I dont want to upset anyone at Universal discussing too much.
Although for those that remember I was an early consultant on Tokyo Drift and I got permission to leak a lot of information about that movie really early on through The Real JDM column in modified. That was the first source of info the world had about the GT-R swap into the mustang, the Veilside RX7 and the Top Secret Z33 being in the movie. It was definately a popular column at the time and got a lot of people talking. For a blast from the past you can download my old column “JDM Goes Hollywood” here: http://www.therealjdm.com/archives/TheRealJDM07.pdf
I take no responsibility for the result of that 3rd movie though…I left early on as things were taking turns for the worse and my concepts were not being implemented due to usual red-tape and movie politics.
At one point however we were going to have a Top Secret full built RB motor for that Mustang and I was going to be building the majority of the cars in the film including a G35 Coupe chop top widebody which I was really looking forward to. That was all before Mitsubishi bought their way in and good concepts got over run with pay to play realities.
It was a great learning experience, and I learned that a vision in a big budget movie changes quite often and true artistry and integrity is extremely difficult to maintain consistently on big budget blockbuster movies. From the artistry and quality perspective one saying comes to mind: too many chefs in the kitchen…
This time around I’m no longer a virgin to the movie industry and I’d like to think that I know a little bit better about what to expect. On part 3 my goal was to rescue the integrity of the franchise. This time I’m more modest…I just want to infuse a couple of really great cars into the movie. I’d like the real heads out there when they watch the movie to be like “well…someone knew what they were doing, that car is dope!” If I accomplish that, I’m good.
More info later on…these guys have been good to me, I dont want to upset them.
